About Knothead Safety

Knothead Safety was created by Square 1 Solutions in response to the 2008 change in the enforcement focus of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) from helping employers learn how to provide a safe working environment, to a stricter posture which includes more severe citations and higher penalties. Because of limited resources, OSHA now looks to make an example of offending employers with high penalties to deter others from ignoring safe work practices.

Because safety management is not considered a profit center, but a cost center and a necessary evil, companies are not hiring safety professionals to help them avoid incurring costly fines; rather, they are telling existing employees – HR managers, supervisors, office managers – that they now wear:

At Knothead Safety, we try to take the mystery out of safety. Our philosophy is that any “Knothead” can implement a safety program that can significantly impact the safety culture at their company. Our mascot, Knothead Ned, uses knowledge, experience, and humor to break down the often-confusing OSHA rules and regulations into something practical and useful.

Currently, the Knothead Safety website offers a schedule of onsite training sessions hosted at our Nevada location. You can register online to attend any of those training sessions.

Moving forward, will offer a plethora of resources for the person who now wears the safety hat but has no formal safety training and limited resources. We are busy behind the scenes gathering the materials you will need to find:

  • An online community of non-professional safety and health officers where we can share ideas, ask questions, network, and convey tricks and tips

  • A safety blog featuring posts geared toward the most fundamental safety and health topics that OSHA is most likely to look at when conducting an inspection

  • Free resources, primarily in the form of “Safety Breaks” which are Safety Meeting topics that you can download, print, and use in your business for field training

  • Periodic Safety Takes: video snippets where a safety professional will discuss relevant topics of in an entertaining and helpful manner

  • A full complement of safety training courses at our Reno, Nevada training facility, and soon, online safety training that will allow you to keep your OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 current in Nevada.  We also provide customized safety training at your location.

  • An online environment where the non-professional safety officer has access to tools, peers, resources, and a forum to better perform safety duties with less stress and more confidence

Square 1 Solutions

square 1 solutionsOur company is truly about returning to "square one." We first opened our doors in Reno/Sparks in March of 2004 when our family owned the then, Command Center franchise for the state of Nevada. After opening 5 stores in just over 2 years, we sold the franchise back to the franchise company in mid 2006. Our entire family had worked in the franchise, and after the sale, worked for Command Center, Inc. As the economy began its tailspin, we were all eventually laid off by the end of March, 2009.

After some time-off, and some soul-searching, we decided that our passion really was in owning our own business; something involving safety and something involving staffing and we decided to go back to square one. Hence, the name of our new company; Square One Solutions. We leased our current location in Reno, Nevada in July of 2009. In June of 2009, the Nevada Legislature had passed a new law requiring all construction workers in Nevada to have their OSHA 10-hour training, and all supervisors of those construction workers to have their OSHA 30-hour training. We began offering OSHA training in late 2009 while we worked on a business plan for our new company and attempted to get financing for our new business.

Around January 1, 2010, unable to secure any financing, we decided it was time to bring the family members into the new company, return to square one, focus on making the business work, continue with our OSHA training, expanding our health and safety offerings, but also providing a full compliment of staffing and labor services that we had so much experience in.

Now in 2014 we are proud to announce the opening of our second location in Billings, Montana. Billings has a vibrant economy and had demonstrated that it has a plan to move the community forward in the right direction. We are happy to announce that we have hired a Billings native to run our new office that clearly understands and has adopted our family philosophy of local control and innovative solutions. We are very excited about introducing our safety training and provisional labor and staffing solutions to the Montana market. Stay tuned, we may announce a third location before the end of the year!
